Rome 2024’s journey starts from Grosseto and passes through Budapest

The national and international promotion campaign for the Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships begins in Grosseto and passes through Budapest. The Italian Junior Athletics Championships, scheduled from today until Sunday, July 23, in Grosseto, represent the first stage in a run-up to next summer’s big event: from June 7 to 12, 2024, Europe’s best athletes will compete at the Olympic Stadium, Foro Italico Park and among the streets of Rome, a month and a half before the start of the Paris Olympics. The Rome 2024 brand will be present within the spaces made available by organizers of other sporting events, athletics and otherwise, to bring and engage as many fans as possible to the European Championships.
In anticipation of the opening of ticket sales, gadgets with the Rome 2024 logo were distributed to the attending public in Grosseto. The campaign will continue at major athletic events organized by Fidal. After the Italian Junior Championships, it will be the turn of the Absolute National Track and Field Championships, scheduled for July 28-30 in Molfetta.
Next, the promotion of Rome 2024 will cross national borders and stop in Budapest, where the World Championships will be held from August 19 to 27. On that occasion, Rome 2024 will have its own dedicated “corner” inside the “Casa Atletica Italiana” set up by Fidal, which will serve as the headquarters of the Italian national team and its partners during the World Championships. At the end of the Budapest event, the great European champions will meet in Rome, which will be the final testing ground for the athletes ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris. Athletics and more.
Rome 2024 will also be present at the “Milano Greenvillage23” that will be set up inside the Snai San Siro Hippodrome during the big equestrian event, the European Show Jumping – FEI Jumping European Championship Milano 2023 – scheduled from August 30 to September 3. Inside Greenvillage23 the public can try their hand at various sports activities, including athletics.

Roma 2024 jumps into the Metaverse along with Larissa Iapichino

A sporting event to be experienced physically inside the stadium and on the streets of the city but also remotely, immersing oneself within a new interactive digital environment. The Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships will have a “phygital” dimension, thanks to the innovative project developed by the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation and the company XMetaReal, which specializes in creating experiences, services and content within the Metaverse.
The dream of Roma 2024 is also taking shape in the digital world. In fact, starting in September, all athletics fans will have a space dedicated to them and will be able to start exploring the sites of the European Championships, where the continent’s best athletes will compete next summer. This will be a unique and immersive experience, never before experienced for a sporting event in Italy, with strong appeal to younger generations and beyond.

Young Italian Larissa Iapichino, who has just graduated as European Under-23 champion in the long jump in Finland after her silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul and her triumph with Italy at the recent European Team Championships in Poland, will be the first athlete to join the Roma 2024 Metaverse as an official testimonial of the project. “While the countdown to next year’s European Championships at the Olympic Stadium has already begun, I can’t wait to jump into the Roma 2024 Metaverse and use my avatar to meet other visitors. The virtual world can be a positive opportunity to bring new people, especially young people, closer to the disciplines of athletics, broadening the audience of spectators even in reality. It will be an honor for me to participate in such an innovative project, in which technology becomes a real springboard to consolidate Roma 2024 as an event capable of intercepting and enhancing new trends in society,” Iapichino said.

As the Metaverse Experience Supplier for Roma 2024, XMetaReal will build a new digital environment inspired by the venues that will host the European Athletics Championships. The Roma 2024 Metaverse will open in September, nine months before the start of the competition, which will be held June 7-12, 2024. The spatiotemporal limits of reality will thus be overcome, to grant the opportunity for anyone to experience Rome 2024 as if they were in the “physical” places. Connected users from all over the world will be able to visit the Metaverse using an avatar, move from place to place by teleportation, take a full tour of the Olympic Stadium track, and preview where the platforms for jumps and throws will be placed on the field during the European Championships. This will provide fans of the various disciplines of athletics with a new tool to select and reserve the ideal stadium seat to watch their favorite competitions live next summer.
To explore the Roma 2024 Metaverse, it will be enough to connect with the most common mobile and fixed devices, while those wearing VR visors, designed specifically for Virtual Reality, will have an even more immersive experience. Users will also be able to interact with digital assets and receive Roma 2024 tokens, redeeming full ownership.

During the experience inside the Metaverse one can also move among the avenues and squares of the Foro Italico Park and visit the Commercial Village, where digital stores will be opened. A new channel made available to the event’s partners, which amplifies and extends commercial opportunities over time, in anticipation of the opening of outlets at the Foro Italico during the European Championships.
“The partnership with XMetaReal to create the Metaverse will mark a turning point in the organization of the European Championships and will allow athletics fans to immerse themselves in a modern, interactive and immersive space. Innovation is one of the key concepts in our plan, and with the Roma 2024 Metaverse we will offer audiences around the world a unique experience with a powerful impact,” said Paolo Carito, general manager of the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation, which is organizing the European Athletics Championships.
“The creation of the Metaverse for Roma 2024 opens up new scenarios and new ways of experiencing sport in an innovative and inclusive way. The possibility of transforming a sporting event into a social event, expanding the audience and spreading the values of sport is now the reality, physical and digital together. We should be proud as “Sistema Italia” to have given birth to such an important initiative. Embracing digital innovation in such a special field as sports really means cultivating a forward-looking mindset. One more “leap forward” toward the Digital Transformation of our country,” concludes Vittorio Zingales, founder and Ceo of XMetaReal.

Italian athletes in history: triumph in the European team competition

A chase that has lasted decades, ideally since 1965, when the European Cup, a continental team event conceived by Italian manager extraordinaire Bruno Zauli (and later dedicated to him), got under way. Since then, amid changes in format (today the review is called European Teams, and is a true tournament among all the countries of the old continent) never had Italy managed to win it. Until, precisely, today, when the spell was broken. It happened in Chorzow, not far from Katowice, Poland, with the blue team triumphing at the end of three days of extraordinarily intense confrontations. In the final session of competition, two Italian successes (seven in total in the event) came thanks to Zane Weir in the shot put (with an excellent 21.59) and Gianmarco Tamberi in the high jump (2.29). Second place for Larissa Iapichino in the long jump (6.66, no wind), thirds for Filippo Tortu in the 200m (20.61, v. -1.3 m/s) and Yeman Crippa in the 5000m (13:34.29). And a superlative overall tightness. The final ranking rewards Italy (426.5 points) by a wide margin over Poland (402.5, so a good 24 lengths away). Third place for Germany, fourth for Spain, fifth to Great Britain. Seven individual successes for the Italian team, as already mentioned (in the previous days victories of Nadia Battocletti in the 5000 meters, Sara Fantini in the hammer, Samuele Ceccarelli in the 100, Alessandro Sibilio in the 400hs, Tobia Bocchi in the triple jump), but also first place in the medal table of the European Games, where Italy collected 14 medals (6 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze). An unparalleled haul. “My thoughts are with Bruno Zauli,” commented Federal President Stefano Mei, “who invented this event: today we have paid tribute to a great man and a great president. Our boys deserve the attention of the whole world, not just Europe. This is the result of the daily work of the clubs on the ground: they are the ones who discover and grow these talents, who then become champions. In these two and a half years the results have been extraordinary, the boys never cease to surprise me.”

DAO is the strategic partner in the role of Marketing Advisor

The team organizing the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships can count on a new strategic partner for the development and enhancement of the event. The EuroRoma 2024 Foundation announces that, as a result of the selection process, DAO S.p.A. has been identified as the company that will serve as Marketing Advisor.

In the commercial village at the Foro Italico, which will be set up for the European Athletics Championships scheduled to be held in Rome from June 7 to 12, 2024, DAO will be Marketing Advisor for sponsoring advertising space and selling dedicated product display space. DAO will exclusively manage the Corporate Hospitality packages to attend the event and the Sponsor Grandstands at the Olympic Stadium.
The European Championships in Rome will turn the spotlight back on athletics a month and a half before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Fifty years after the only edition held in the capital in 1974, the event’s rich program includes six days of spectacular challenges between the continent’s best athletes, who will compete at the Olympic Stadium, the Foro Italico Park and some of Rome’s most evocative venues, offering the public the opportunity to witness all the most anticipated competitions live. Tickets, season tickets and special packages will go on sale starting this summer.
“The presence of the DAO team at our side will help increase the appeal of the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships by providing the widest possibilities for collaboration with commercial partners. Today, the national and international athletics scene offers recognizable assets and increasingly popular champions, which companies can partner with to enhance their brands,” said Paolo Carito, the general manager of the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation, which is in charge of organizing the event.

Exactly one year to go until the start of the Roma2024 European Championships.

Today, June 7, is exactly one year away from the start of one of the most important and exciting sporting events ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The #Roma2024 European Athletics Championships will take place June 7-12, 50 years after the Italian capital last hosted the competition in 1974.
The picturesque setting of the Olympic Stadium, which also hosted the 1960 Olympic Games and the 1987 World Athletics Championships, and the Foro Italico Park will be the setting for the competition. Some competitions, including the qualifying phase of the men’s and women’s weight throw, will be held at other historic and symbolic venues in the city.
The #Roma2024 half-marathon route is designed to show athletes and spectators from around the world who will follow the race some of the city’s most famous and iconic places. The half-marathon and 20-kilometer march routes (included in the European Championships program for the first time during an Olympic year), as well as the weight throw qualifying venue, have been planned in exceptional locations that will be revealed later.
Another new addition to the program is the 4×400-meter mixed relay, which will make its debut at the #Roma2024 European Athletics Championships, along with five other relay races, including the men’s and women’s 4×100 meters and the men’s and women’s 4×400 meters.
More than 1,000 athletes from all over Europe will participate in next year’s event, marking the 26th edition of the European Athletics Championships, the longest running and most prestigious event on the European athletics calendar.

Remembering Rome 1974
In that edition, a noisy crowd of 60,000 people in the Italian capital admired live the triumph of the late Pietro Mennea – still the European 200m record holder with 19″72 – who took gold in the 200 meters, improving on his silver medal won in the 100 meters.
The 1974 European Championships in Rome also saw the rise of the very strong Sara Simeoni, who won her first major career medal, taking bronze in the high jump at the age of 21. Simeoni would go on to win European gold four years later in Prague, equaling the world record of 2.01 meters, and then also win Olympic gold in Moscow in 1980.
The star of those championships was undoubtedly Poland’s Irena Szewinska, who won the 100-meter and 200-meter titles, setting championship records in 11″13 and 22″51, respectively. Szewinska would later add a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter relay before finishing her 1974 European Championships in Rome with an extraordinary time of 48″5 in the 4×400-meter relay.
In total, 24 gold medals were awarded with record performances and four world records were set during the competition.

Aiming #Roma2024
Fifty years later, the European Athletics Championships return to the Olympic Stadium. Will the history of athletics be written again?
#Roma2024 could be Italy’s moment, as Italy’s representative team has rarely been in better shape at the European Championships. This was evidenced by the extraordinary Olympic campaign in Tokyo 2020, in which Italian athletes exceeded all expectations by winning five gold medals, before achieving in Munich 2022 the best medal haul ever at the European Athletics Championships since 1990, with 11 medals won.
Marcell Jacobs and Gianmarco Tamberi won two gold medals in the space of an hour at Tokyo 2020, with Jacobs going on to win his second gold in the 4×100-meter relay. Both confirmed their Olympic successes by winning their respective European titles in Munich 2022. And it is by no means to be ruled out that all four of Italy’s individual Olympic champions will compete at #Roma2024.
With the 20-kilometer march included as part of the European Athletics Championships program for the first time in an Olympic year, Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions Antonella Palmisano and Massimo Stano will have the opportunity to win European titles to add to their respective resumes before they compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
In addition to Italian veterans already established in the international athletics scene, some of Italy’s best young talents are also expected to become stars at #Roma2024. Still 18 years old, the charismatic and predestined Mattia Furlani recently jumped 8.44 meters, albeit with marginal favorable wind, while his long jump partner Larissa Iapichino, 20, will try to return to the podium after winning silver at the Istanbul 2023 European Indoor Championships.

The plan is ready
“Many world records have been set in Rome,” said European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov, “and we expect just as many excellent performances during Rome 2024, especially from the stars of Italian athletics. We look forward to that moment, in a year that will bring the world of European Athletics and Rome 2024 right into the hearts of the public, generating excitement and enthusiasm. Congratulations to the Local Organizing Committee and the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL). Rome 2024 could be the best European Athletics Championships ever.”
“The EuroRoma2024 Foundation will work hard to organize an exceptional event,” said EuroRoma2024 Foundation general director Paolo Carito, “with the support of all the institutions involved, starting with the Italian Federation, the government, the City of Rome, the Lazio Region, CONI and Sport and Health. The whole team is working hard to host such an important event and to honor the value of athletics. It has been 50 years since the last European Athletics Championships were held in Rome, the city will once again be ready to welcome all the legends and outstanding European athletes, old and new.”
Also projecting herself to #Roma2024 is European silver medalist in the indoor long jump, Larissa Iapichino: “It’s really exciting. For athletes,” explains the Italian jumper, “having the support of the home crowd is an honor and something that gives you a lot of energy. I’m excited and I think it’s going to be a great European Championships. I can already feel the excitement.”
