Gianmarco Tamberi was born in Civitanova Marche on June 1, 1992. He is 1.92 centimeters tall and weighs 77 kilograms. He is an Italian high hurdler, Olympic champion at the Tokyo 2020 Games and world champion at the Budapest 2023 World Championships. Nicknamed Half-shave or Gimbo, he is the son of former high jumper and Italian record holder Marco Tamberi, his longtime coach.
A national record holder in the specialty both outdoors and indoors, he has won one world indoor title (Portland 2016), two European outdoor titles (Amsterdam 2016 and Munich 2022) and one European indoor title (Glasgow 2019), as well as 9 Italian overall titles between outdoor and indoor.
Early career
Having become an athlete specializing in the high jump after devoting himself to basketball at a very young age, he has already won every possible title in this competition: in 2009 he had a record of 2.07 meters to his credit, which he improved the following year, on June 6 in Florence, to 2.14 meters. At only nineteen years of age, in 2011, he achieved a personal best by taking the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, with a measurement of 2.25 meters.
It was in 2011 that Gianmarco Tamberi embarked on the habit of shaving his beard only on one side, following his father’s suggestion. Since then, whenever he reaches the finals, he competes with his beard shaved on one side only.
In 2015, the year in which he finished eighth at the World Championships in Beijing, Gianmarco Tamberi-after having already beaten Marcello Benvenuti’s national record by jumping to 2.34 meters-became the Italian high jump recordman: in Eberstadt, Germany, he jumped first to 2.35 meters on his third attempt, and then even to 2.37 meters on his first. A record that was further improved on February 13, 2016, albeit in an indoor event, with the 2.38 meters jumped in Hustopece, Czech Republic. On March 6 of the same year Gianmarco won the Italian Absolute Championships in Ancona, jumping to 2.36 meters.
A few days later he became world indoor champion by winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Portland, again measuring 2.36 meters. The last time of a world gold for Italian athletics was thirteen years earlier: in Paris in 2003 with Giuseppe Gibilisco’s victory in the pole vault.
In July 2016, at the European Championships in Amsterdam, Gianmarco Tamberi won a historic gold medal by jumping 2 meters and 32 centimeters. A few days later he competed at the Monte Carlo meeting, where he set a new Italian record: 2 meters and 39 centimeters. In Monte Carlo, however, he seriously injured a ligament in his ankle, which led him to miss the Rio Olympics in late August.
The Tokyo Olympics finally arrived and Tamberi, who has recovered from injury, did not miss a single jump in the competition, up to 2 meters 37, winning a historic gold medal, tied with Qatari athlete Mutaz Essa Barshim.
He was the first Italian to win the Diamond League, in 2021, a success repeated the following year, again in Zurich, again with a measurement of 2.34.
In August 2022, he also won gold at the European Championships in Munich, jumping 2 meters 30 and winning his second European title after the one in Amsterdam 2016.
To complete his extraordinary gallery of triumphs, Tamberi won the gold medal at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, jumping 2.36 meters on his first attempt.
In addition to his sporting feats, Gianmarco Tamberi is also known for some interesting trivia:
Unique style: Gianmarco Tamberi is known for his unique and unmistakable style. We often see him wearing colorful socks that become an integral part of his image.
His passions: in 2021 he participated in the All Star Game as a “Celebrity” fulfilling his dream in Nba basketball. Off the track, Tamberi is passionate about music: he has a background as a rock drummer in the band “The Dark Melody” and before the final in the high jump at the 2023 World Championships, he went wild playing drums to charge himself and the fans in Budapest.
Nutrition: Although he must adhere to a strict diet during training and competitions, he is fond of Sicilian cannoli, which he loves to eat at the end of the competition period.
